Background of the Study

Effective communication between teachers and students is a fundamental aspect of successful education, influencing learning outcomes, student engagement, and academic performance. Traditional teacher-student communication methods, such as face-to-face interactions, classroom discussions, and printed notices, are often constrained by time limitations, large class sizes, and geographical barriers (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). These limitations can lead to misunderstandings, delayed feedback, and reduced student participation in academic activities (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2023).

The increasing adoption of mobile technologies in education has provided new opportunities for enhancing communication between teachers and students. Mobile platforms, such as messaging apps, learning management systems (LMS), and real-time feedback tools, allow seamless interactions, instant notifications, and personalized support for students (Olawale & Musa, 2024). AI-powered mobile communication tools can further improve engagement by analyzing student learning patterns and providing automated, customized responses (Adebayo & Ibrahim, 2023).

Despite the potential of mobile platforms in enhancing teacher-student communication, their adoption in secondary schools in Damaturu Local Government Area remains limited. Many schools still rely on conventional methods that do not leverage digital technologies to facilitate timely and effective communication (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Additionally, issues such as poor internet connectivity, lack of mobile devices, and teachers’ limited digital literacy hinder the effective use of mobile platforms in education (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).

This study aims to examine the role of mobile platforms in improving teacher-student communication in secondary schools in Damaturu. By assessing existing communication challenges, evaluating the effectiveness of mobile-based solutions, and proposing strategies for their implementation, the research seeks to contribute to a more interactive and supportive learning environment.

Statement of the Problem

In many secondary schools in Damaturu, teacher-student communication is hindered by challenges such as time constraints, limited access to teachers outside the classroom, and delayed feedback on assignments and academic concerns. Large class sizes make it difficult for teachers to provide personalized attention, while students struggle to get timely responses to their questions (Olawale & Musa, 2023). These challenges often lead to disengagement, reduced academic performance, and a lack of motivation among students (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).

While mobile platforms offer promising solutions for improving communication, their adoption in secondary schools in Damaturu remains minimal. Factors such as inadequate technological infrastructure, lack of digital training for teachers, and students' limited access to smartphones contribute to the slow integration of mobile communication tools in education (Okonkwo & Salisu, 2024). Without addressing these barriers, students may continue to experience ineffective communication, which negatively impacts their academic progress.

This study seeks to investigate how mobile platforms can be effectively utilized to enhance teacher-student communication in secondary schools. By identifying communication gaps and proposing practical strategies for mobile technology integration, the research aims to improve student engagement and academic support.
